Barnabas Portrait by R-Tan Barnabas Portrait by R-Tan
This is my entry for the Dark Shadows contest. I don't normally do portraits, it's one of my weakest areas. This was a good excuse to practice some portraiture. Plus the chance of Tim Burton judging my piece is priceless. About half of my time was spent on the faces, and I still feel I haven't got them quite right. I guess that's what I get for not choosing an existing pose to paint from. I spent a lot of time on their eyes. They both have an intense stare that I wanted to capture.

I never really watched the series. I was still a little kid when I came across it, and at that time I found the series very slow with too much drama. I'm glad the movie is going in a different direction.

As always good luck to everyone who entered a piece.

Edit: since I have a couple more days until the deadline I think I'll work on it more, there are some things that are bothering me.

Update: I spent all night redoing both faces. As well as some other small things. I had to put a band-aid on my finger because a blister was forming where the wacom pen resting. I very happy with the result and glad I went back to fix their faces. I think this is the final version but there's still 2 day left and I may find something else that bothers me.

Here is the prior version.

I would like to thank ~G-gG [link] for some really good suggestions to improve the piece.

Also DA, keep these sponsored contests coming. I think it's a great chance for an unknown to get exposure, and earn great prizes. It's also a good way to see how your skills stand up to others in the field.

I gotta tell ya, I had this image penciled in in the top 3... I added eva green also and tim burton to my picture and after I made a rant on the decision of the top ten, someone wrote me and said I may have been in violation because I had the other two characters - sigh... I was just trying to send something to burton that he might like - seems like you had a similar thought. anyway, awesome work, I can tell it's not a photo copy and that you did try and be creative - love the mirror idea too by the way.

The only thing I can see that's off is that his head is a bit too tall. It needs to be like how it was in your first version.

Other than that this is a great piece! Love the mirror, and overall very nicely detailed!

Beautiful painting, but with the mirror it seems a little odd. I think the cup should be further smaller, cause right now you have the cup infront of the mirrored arm, when i actuality it should behind.

I already had the file open because of other changes, and it was on a separate layer.
Also I took a look at your entry. I like how it's not just a copy of an existing photo like most of the other entries. I also like the low light source. I now wish I had used similar lighting, it works better for setting the mood.
Right now I need to stop just looking at my entry. I keep finding elements to change.

I graduated in 2000. I worked in retail since then, in various positions(manager, tech, installation, etc.) I hadn't even really started painting again until about 2007, when I got Corel Painter. I had been using Painter until about four months ago. I got sick of how unstable Painter was so I made the switch to CS5. I'm still getting used to photoshop, it's completely different and painter.

Since you were there recently I'm curious to know if they have any digital illustration classes now? When I was there it was one class, that only covered adobe illustrator, which wasn't my cup of tea. Although it was nice to learn about the software I knew I would never use it again.

Also are you looking to go into some kind of concept position? Just by the work in your gallery.

I see i see... 2000 ahhh, retail? mmmmmmm word? corel broken... SwiTCH? okay okay, Ahhh. Dang... I see i see.

I am having a terrible time with finding a job, applied to at least 20 posistion, including small freelance gigs, NOTHING... But im still hopeful, at the moment just working to promot my name. Ive got very little time on my loan grace, one month actually... thats one of the reasons i need the win. But anways. Nuff about me, digital illustration... not really nope. I had probably, 1 real lesson from the school by one of the teachers who was fresh teaching, you might know him, i think he graduated like 2004. Jason newhouse. Maybe he was a youngn when you were there. He became a teacher around 2007 and left the school around 2010. GOne and moved on with concept art position. But it wasnt any kind of official lesson, just shared knowledge. He felt like doing a quick demo that day. Anyway, the school, lacks in digital. I dont think there is anyone there strong in digital over there, only minorly knowledgable. I learned allll, the techniques myself, through youtube and stuff. The school remains very traditional. And illustrator is NOT my cup either. Lately been tryin to pick it up, as there is lots of gigs doing logos and stuff. Spend 80+ gs to learn concept art, and end up doing logos.. i dont wanna....you know even up till my senior year, i had friends who had never used photoshop, nothing like a formal introduction, just use what you know kinda mentality. It sucks.

I am still looking concept art positions. Yes. Still tryin. Glad to have met you R Tan.

On my DA profile page I have some links to some good places to buy some downloadable instructional videos by artist in the concept field. Their not to expensive(around $20-40 each) but their really useful. They also occasionally offer online webinars where the artists paints streaming live and you can ask a question through a moderator. I also go to youtube a lot for videos.

I haven't applied to anywhere yet, but I do keep an eye on who's hiring. I constantly get rss feeds, from around 20 different sources, with jobs in that line of work. Even craigslist occasional has some good leads. Their are quite a few companies in the area. I always see posts from EA Games, but about half the time its for texture or 3d modelers. Good luck with the job hunting.

Well, since your fixing stuff, let me put some other things that are good but could be great:
The glass in the mirror (it looks like Barnabas is holding two glasses) you shlould scale down the reflection ans could also add some shine to it, in order to make it look a bit more separate from the room.
The blood/wine running through Barnabas chin doesnt quite seem to be the same thing in the glass, maybe if you made both in much alike tones, it wouldlook better.
here it is. Overall its a great piece, one of the best Ive seen in the contest (in which I cannot enter because Im not us resident......=( )

Just to let you know I edited the image again to try to fix the issues that you brought up. I made the reflection the of the cup smaller and the bumped up the contrast on the actual glass and hand to pull it forward. The glare didn't work out to well, so instead I dialed down the contrast on everything in the mirror to imply a reflection, and added some water spots. I also added some slight halo effects.
I think I better stop tinkering with it, I'm starting to feel like George Lucas with the Star Wars movies.
I put a little shout out to you in the description. Thanks again for the suggestions.

I agree. Although I don't think that they should be excluded, it sucks to have to sift passed about 75% of the entries. It happens with all the sponsored contests they hold here. What I also find funny are the people who submit a piece 2 days after the contest is announced, even though they give you 3 weeks or more to work on it. I'm usually working up to the deadline.

Yes, I'm not sure what that's about. It just doesn't make sense- why have a deadline if you don't adhere to it. But again, great piece and good luck! And I agree with the comments below, I think those few changes would really make it perfect!

I think my favorite part of this piece is the refelction in the mirror. Not everyone I think would think to remember that vampires have no reflection; it makes the illustration more interesting. :) The detailing on his shirt is also incredible. You did a great job. The first of these entries I've actually commented on. =) And although you said portraits are your weakness, you did a wonderful job! I'm currently in my first figure drawing class and this is leaps and bounds better than what I can do. The way his hand grasps the glass looks realistic, not awkward at all. Well done :)

I come from more of an illustration background. I like each picture to tell a story. That's one of the reasons that I don't like simple portraits, it looks like someone just posing for the camera. My whole concept from the beginning was centered around the mirror. I wanted to imply a vampire without showing any fangs.

Good luck on your figure drawing class. After a while you'll actually get sick of people being naked.

Ah that makes sense. That's similar to what I like to draw, also. I like to leave portraits for photographs for the most part. But it's all part of learning, I guess.

Thanks! We have about 5 weeks left and the "excitement" has died down for the most part.
